Family Photos :: Breakfast with the Cheathams

A while back (actually, a loooong time ago), through a series of very kind referrals, Missy and Josh hired me to shoot their engagement photos in Orange, CA (Scroll down for one of our faves from that session). Since then, the Cheatham family and I have gone from a photographer-and-client relationship to one of wonderful friendship and out-of-town, overnight guest status. How lucky am I?

When I visited this summer, Missy and Josh offered me a room, an umbrella (because I forgot mine), lots of bacon, and even some 18-year old scotch.

I returned the favor by bringing my camera along to take some pictures of their growing little family. A few shots were over the bacon during breakfast and others I shot while following them through their morning routine. Here are a few of my favorites.

Sneak Peek :: Family Photos at the Park

Family photos at the park in San Diego

Having two kids of my own, family photos are a pretty big deal to me on a personal level. And I’m not just talking about the cutesy, posed photos where everyone is pristine, every tooth is showing through huge smiles, and not one eye is blinking, bruised, or otherwise distracted from the camera. While those look-at-me photos certainly have their place, the photos that mean the most to me as a father are the ones where I can recognize my kids’ personalities through what they’re playing/wearing/singing/kicking/cuddling.

Here are some sneak peeks from a session I shot recently that make me smile.

Scenes from the Philippines

Like I mentioned recently, Christyn and I were in the Philippines a few months ago with our kids and extended families. I know I usually only blog moments and portraits, but I figured I’d show some of the scenes that I photographed in the Philippines. The photos below are from Manila, Tagaytay, and Palawan.

Geek note: 2 of these were shot with my Nikon D700, but the rest were made with my iPhone or an Olympus OM-D E-M5 micro-4/3 camera. Loved shooting with the Olympus!

Island Palms Resort Wedding :: Jennifer + James

Jennifer and James exchanged vows on a typically beautiful San Diego afternoon at the Island Palms Resort on Shelter Island. A few weeks before their big day, I met up with them for dinner to catch up and go over final logistical details, and that short get-together proved to be both a small sample of how their wedding day would feel and a reflection of how Jen and James are themselves — pleasant, down-to-earth, engaging and unmistakably warm. I’m incredibly proud to share their story through some of my favorite photos of the day.

Jen & James, I’m so glad to call you friends, and I’m looking forward to the next time we share a meal together.

(Big thanks to my friend Kristina Cazares-Neri who came and second-shot for me and did a wonderful job.)
