This Hindu-Jewish wedding of Rupa and Mike had been on my mind since I shot their engagement session in San Diego last summer. For one thing, they are both really funny and very laid back, and I knew that we would get along great. I also knew that, being a destination wedding (they actually live in San Diego), the smaller guest list would provide a more intimate atmosphere. Their friends and family did not disappoint, and everyone treated us like part of the group — from when we arrived before the rehearsal (we even had a sweet care package waiting for us in our hotel room when we checked in, thanks Rupa!) until we left the morning after. And finally, I knew from Rupa’s descriptions that the ceremony would lend itself to all sorts of uniqueness, since there would be Hindu and Jewish traditional aspects woven throughout.
As a side note though, I have to admit that midway through the ceremony, I started getting overwhelmed visually by all the meticulous aspects of the rituals that were being performed, and really zoned into making sure I captured them all. But the best part of it all was catching several of those looks between Mike and Rupa that were so telling of sweetness, humor, relief, tenderness, and excitement. That’s the most fulfilling part of my day as a wedding photographer!
A big shout-out goes to my buddy Ari, who endured some travel pains to fly out from San Luis Obispo to Virginia Beach to second shoot with me. And I can’t forget to mention the talented ladies Tamra & Brenda of who coordinated the day.
What follows are some of my favorites from the day. Don’t miss the slideshow at the end!
